Karim Rashid: industrial designer
Born in Cairo in 1960 and raised in Canada, Karim Rashid graduated in industrial design from Carleton University in Ottawa, before continuing his training in Italy alongside leading figures of design such as Ettore Sottsass. He founded his New York studio in 1993 and became one of the most prolific designers of his generation, with more than 3,000 designs in production and over 300 awards across more than 40 countries.
A pop, futuristic signature, faithful to plastic
Karim Rashid describes himself as a "poet of plastic", a material he has considered since childhood to be the most alive and energetic of all: glossy, smooth, transparent, soft to the touch and recyclable. His favourite palette leans towards pink and techno shades, colours he associates with the vibration and energy of the digital world. Outside design, which he sees as inseparable from his life, he composes electronic music, performs as a DJ, runs and trains every day, and cooks whenever he has the time.
Karim Rashid's collections for Vondom
Karim Rashid has worked with Vondom since the brand's early days, on collections that have become emblematic, such as Vertex, with its angular geometry inspired by cut glass, Voxel, which extends its architectural language, Pal, with its minimalist hourglass silhouette, and Surf, inspired by the movement of waves. Several of these pieces have received Good Design Awards.
