Marcel Wanders: designer

Born in Boxtel, in the Netherlands, in 1963, Marcel Wanders graduated cum laude from the ArtEZ Institute of the Arts in Arnhem in 1988, having first been expelled from the Design Academy Eindhoven. He opened his own studio in Amsterdam and shortly afterwards co-founded the design label Moooi, where he remains art director. Recognised from his Knotted Chair onwards, which combined high-tech materials with craftsmanship, he has since developed more than 1,900 projects, several of which now feature in international art museums.

A passion fuelled by the history of objects and childhood imagination

Marcel Wanders describes himself as passionate, a little whimsical and sometimes elsewhere, but always driven by that passion. He has vivid memories of his childhood, when he built magical objects from broken parts salvaged in his father's workshop, a playground that nurtured his imagination. He says he is drawn to objects that carry a story, something that gives them meaning and relevance in the present day, a sensitivity that runs through much of his work.

Marcel Wanders' collections for Vondom

For Vondom, Marcel Wanders designed the Suave collection, his studio's first collaboration with polyurethane injection technology, for seating that is both durable and close to the comfort of an indoor sofa. He also designed Venus, a generously curved vase shaped by a glamorous and poetic sensibility.
