Ramón Esteve: architect and designer

After graduating in architecture from the Madrid School of Architecture (ETSAM) in 1990, Ramón Esteve founded his own practice, Ramón Esteve Estudio de Arquitectura, in 1991. His work spans architecture and interior design, industrial design and art direction, and is recognised well beyond Spain.

A philosophy centred on harmony and the essential

Harmony, serenity and essentiality define all of his work. Rather than simply designing objects, Ramón Esteve seeks to create atmospheres that lend themselves to memorable experiences. His own home reflects the same pared-back approach: he describes it as almost empty of objects, a space where only the essential has its place, despite a real passion for books, history, cinema and everyday Mediterranean cooking.

This search for simplicity goes hand in hand with a distinctive relationship with colour. Personally drawn to natural tones, he does not hesitate to play with bolder colours when it comes to a project, a tension between personal restraint and creative freedom that runs through much of his work. A great admirer of other designers' work, he admits a particular attraction to the simplicity of Stefano Giovannoni's natural forms, one of the few designers whose pieces he would happily choose for his own home.
