Opened in November 2018 on the She Shan massif, the InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland takes the opposite approach to vertical hospitality. Rather than rising up, it sinks into a disused quarry ninety metres deep, following the natural relief of the site.

The lowest hotel in the world

By transforming an abandoned quarry into a unique place, the hotel has established itself as the lowest hotel in the world. Its structure has two storeys above ground and fourteen levels below, two of them under water.

A balance between humanity and nature

The guiding idea of the project is the balance between people and their environment, an alliance between architecture and natural setting rather than bionic architecture. The firm Atkins is behind the concept and the façade, while the interior design was entrusted to the studio CCD (Cheng Chung Design).

A feat of integration

Designed to minimise its environmental impact, the plan brought together the best Chinese and Western architecture firms to overcome technical barriers. Most of the building remains housed in the disused pit, and the quarry rock has been integrated into the design.

An outdoor platform by Vondom

Vondom worked hand in hand with CCD to create an outdoor platform on the fourteenth underground level, respecting the concept of balance. The challenge: to integrate the furniture, indoor and outdoor, seamlessly into the natural environment around it.

With their sculptural, expressive forms, the Faz and Ulm collections by Ramón Esteve, the Mora lamp from the Noma collection by Javier Mariscal and the Fiesta collection by Archirivolto were chosen to create an atmosphere of harmony and serenity.

Luxury down to the smallest detail

Each of the three hundred and thirty-six rooms offers incomparable views and turquoise water in the bathroom, worthy of Caribbean beaches. One of the suites even houses an aquarium. High-quality materials, respect for the environment and innovation are the cornerstones of this extraordinary hotel.
